Game of Thrones ‘the long night’
Loyal fans to the hit series Game of thrones are currently experiencing a taste of the long wait book fans have been experiencing for years. Luckily for them, HBO is set to show more than just one spin off series after the end of Game of thrones this coming year.
HBO recently ordered the first of this spin off series with no announced title but speculation are hinting at either ‘the long night’ or ‘the age of heroes’. The series was originally thought to take place 10,000 years before the current happens in Westeros but a recent interview with ‘song of ice and fire’ author George R.R Martin puts the series at around 5000 years before the current events.
“It’s closer to 5,000 years. But you’re right. Westeros is a very different place. There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series.”
The show will of course be different, with more emphasis put on world building the kingdoms than power plays we have come to love. This is an era where mythical figures hail such as bran the builder, who build the great wall and Lann the cleaver, both of whom founded the Stark and Lannister houses. They are likely to appear though not confirmed yet. The timeline shift also gives the fans a sense of assurance since it may line up to the rise of Valyria where the Targaryen are from hinting at bigger dragons perhaps making their way on the screen later on. A logline from HBO teases the plot without divulging any specifics: "Only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend — it's not the story we think we know."
The series is currently being developed by Martin and Jane Goldman, with the only confirmed casting being Naomi Watts (Showtime's Twin Peaks: The Return) as a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret, and Josh Whitehouse (Masterpiece's Poldark) as a key role, with limited details about his character. The show will not debut at least a year after game of thrones culminates mid of next year.
