The Witcher has been stories, novels, comic books, a video game, a tabletop game and even a polish film, and now a planned series. Starting off as a book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski in the 80s, it was adapted to a video game by Warsaw-based game studio CD Projekt Red. The games are predominantly what made the story of the Witcher as big as they are with great critical and commercial success. Now Netflix is in plans to develop a series based on the same and things are looking up.

The show has found its show runner in Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who was previously a producer on Netflix’s daredevil and defenders. She took a social media hiatus in September to focus on the writing of the series. Joining her as executive producers include game of thrones and House of Card’s Alik Sakharov, Sean Daniel, Jason Brown, Kathy Lingg, Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko.

Henry cavil, known for his role as superman in Man of steel, Batman vs Superman and Justice League, has been cast as Gerald of Rivia, the main protagonist. He is a traveler who makes his due by slaying monsters wherever he his travels leads him. This particular cast has much promise since long before it was announced, cavil was favorite among the fans for the role. He is a big name and will undoubtedly bring a large following to the series.

Recently, the Netflix show announced the casting of Yennefer and Ciri. Anya Chalotra, from ABC Murders, has landed the role of Yennefer. She is the main love interest of Gerald. She is also a powerful sorceress and the mother figure of Ciri. Freya Allan from the wars of the Worlds, has been cast as Cirilla Fiona, better known as Ciri. She is the princess of cintra and adopted child of Gerald and Yennefer. She has elder blood that gives her the power to cross space and time.

Other cast confirmed are Jodhi May from Game of Thrones, as Queen Calanthe; Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson from Fortitude, as her husband, the knight Eist; Adam Levy from Knightfall as the druid Mousesack; MyAnna Buring as the head of the magical academy at Aretuza, Tissaia; Mimi Ndiweni and Therica Wilson-Read as novice sorcerers; and Millie Brady as the outcast Princess Renfri.

With no confirmed date for the series, we can only hope there is not too much time between now and the release day. Though the games have been quite the success, the show runner is clear on creating their own visual representation unlike what the game offers. That is not saying it will be two totally separate entities, she confirmed she is a fan of the games herself. We can only hope it will good enough to give shows like Game of Thrones a run for their money.

All there is to now, is wait for further news and possible release day. If you haven’t played the games, or read the books, you could keep yourself busy with those before the day arrives.
